What This Site Does
Illinois treats most jail and inmate information as public. The tricky part is rarely the law. It is knowing which system holds the person you are trying to find. Custody is split across three layers, and each one runs a different lookup.
The Johnson County Sheriff handles the local jail population, which is mostly people awaiting trial or serving short terms. Johnson County does not publish its own online jail roster, so the local trail runs through the sheriff's office, the circuit court, the VINE notification service, and the statewide locator instead of a single county search box. The Illinois Department of Corrections keeps a separate locator for people who have been sentenced to state prison. Federal and immigration detainees do not appear in either of those. They show up in the Bureau of Prisons or ICE systems. We gather these rosters, locators, contacts, visitation notes, and request steps and explain which one fits your situation.

Only the sheriff's office or the corrections department can confirm whether someone is in custody right now, what the charges are, or when a release happens. We can steer you to the correct roster or locator, but the official answer always comes from that agency.
